Terms of Service

Last updated: May 2, 2026

By using Subtext you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1.The service

Subtext is a browser extension and web service that overlays dual subtitles and translations on streaming video, with optional features for word lookup, vocab cards, idiom detection, and study mode. The service is provided as-is and may change as we add features and refine the platform.

2.Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use Subtext. If you live in a jurisdiction with a higher age of digital consent, you must meet that threshold.

3.Accounts

A free account is optional for basic features but required for paid features and for saving your library. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure. You may not share your account in a way that exceeds the limits of your subscription tier.

4.Subscription, billing, and refunds

Paid subscriptions renew automatically on the cadence you select (monthly or yearly) until canceled. You can cancel from Account Settings at any time; your paid features remain active until the end of the current billing period. We do not offer refunds as a standard policy. If something genuinely went wrong (you were double-charged, the service was unavailable, etc.), reach out and we will make it right. We may change pricing or credit allotments with at least 30 days' notice for existing subscribers; new prices take effect on your next billing cycle.

5.Acceptable use

You agree not to: — Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source of the extension or service. — Use the service to translate content you do not have the right to view or process. — Resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit access to the service. — Use the service to generate content that violates the law, infringes others' rights, or is intended to harass, defraud, or harm. — Interfere with the service's operation, security, or other users' accounts.

6.Intellectual property

Subtext (the brand, the software, the documentation) is owned by us. You receive a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the service per these Terms.

7.Your content

Words, phrases, idioms, notes, and similar content you save remain yours. You grant us the limited license needed to store, display, and process them solely to provide the service to you. We do not claim ownership of your saved content.

8.Termination

You may close your account at any time from Account Settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, with notice when reasonable.

9.Disclaimers

Translations are produced by automated systems and may contain errors. Idiom detection may miss or misidentify expressions. We do not warrant the accuracy of translations, vocab cards, or learning content. Subtext is a study aid, not a certified translation service. The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

10.Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.

11.Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced via email or an in-app notice; continued use after the effective date means you accept the updated Terms.

12.Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, USA. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Georgia.
